A lovely blended whisky from Japan, created by Ichiro Akuto, the Japanese whisky extraordinaire. This particular gem is made with both malt and grain whisky from Japan as well as (possibly) some whisky from other countries too – the label describes it as “a worldwide blended whisky”. 

Nose: Peach and dried apricot, sweet butterscotch, vanilla cream, citrus zest, synthetic bananas and gooey malt.

Palate: Toffee first and foremost, with notes of barley malt, gingerbread, tropical fruits, honeyed pipe tobacco lveas, black pepper, roasted chestnut and freshly cut hay.

Finish: Medium length with vanilla and dried tropical fruit.

A perfumed, fruity nose with plenty of lemon sherbet, some mango, guava and cherry. Strains of toffee, brown sugar and vanilla join later. Residues of lemon and marmite fight it out in an empty glass; the distillery and the warehouse, best of chums. As with the nose, the palate is all about the fruit, only this time it’s cherry that takes the vanguard followed by a slow motion, brown-sugared almond bomb, leaving no part of the goblet untouched . Lots of stewed fruits on the nose. There’s also aged Bourbon notes. Water brings out custard creams. Surprisingly smooth on the palate. The alcohol is very present. It’s like Bourbon infused milk chocolate.

Another nutty, meaty, savory nose, with sweet notes in the backdrop. Very sweet pruney flavors initially on the palate, with fruit cake and big clove, chilli and dry cinnamon. Walnut and hazelnut on the very dry finish.

Immediately and subtly liquor rich. Tiny bit of incense, a thread of spice and smoke.

Caramel, marzipan, coffee-vanilla, fudge, rich, creamy, dried black fruits. Integrated and surprisingly light. Element of sandalwood. Starts creamy, waters out, almost disappears before rubbing hot brown sugar into the oesophagus. Tiny bitter trace.

Nose: Sweeter and fruitier than the Coffey Malt, this is has oodles of sweet spice, mango and papaya aromas, candied orange peel and coconut.

Palate: Toffee popcorn, with more of that heady citrus and tropical fruit. Quite a mouthful.

Finish: Rich oak and marmalade notes dominate.

Nose: Fresh and clean, with aromas of candied lemon peel and rich cake spices.

Palate: Robust and spicy, quite a dense mouthfeel and richly textured, with cinnamon and clove on the palate, and citrus-tinged freshness to lighten the load.

Finish: Harmonious blend of dense spices, rich oak, and lemon and orange notes. Delightful.

Comment: A fascinating experiment that more than passes the test. This is a delightfully fruity, spicy whisky with a refreshing aromatic zing.
