A lovely blended whisky from Japan, created by Ichiro Akuto, the Japanese whisky extraordinaire. This particular gem is made with both malt and grain whisky from Japan as well as (possibly) some whisky from other countries too – the label describes it as “a worldwide blended whisky”.

Nose: Peach and dried apricot, sweet butterscotch, vanilla cream, citrus zest, synthetic bananas and gooey malt.

Palate: Toffee first and foremost, with notes of barley malt, gingerbread, tropical fruits, honeyed pipe tobacco lveas, black pepper, roasted chestnut and freshly cut hay.

Finish: Medium length with vanilla and dried tropical fruit.

A perfumed, fruity nose with plenty of lemon sherbet, some mango, guava and cherry. Strains of toffee, brown sugar and vanilla join later. Residues of lemon and marmite fight it out in an empty glass; the distillery and the warehouse, best of chums. As with the nose, the palate is all about the fruit, only this time it’s cherry that takes the vanguard followed by a slow motion, brown-sugared almond bomb, leaving no part of the goblet untouched . The finish is sweet, dry and

Lots of stewed fruits on the nose. There’s also aged Bourbon notes. Water brings out custard creams. Surprisingly smooth on the palate. The alcohol is very present. It’s like Bourbon infused milk chocolate.

Another nutty, meaty, savory nose, with sweet notes in the backdrop. Very sweet pruney flavors initially on the palate, with fruit cake and big clove, chilli and dry cinnamon. Walnut and hazelnut on the very dry finish.

Immediately and subtly liquor rich. Tiny bit of incense, a thread of spice and smoke.

Caramel, marzipan, coffee-vanilla, fudge, rich, creamy, dried black fruits. Integrated and surprisingly light. Element of sandalwood. Starts creamy, waters out, almost disappears before rubbing hot brown sugar into the oesophagus. Tiny bitter trace.

The Mikkeller Spirits Black series is the sine qua non of Mikkeller Spirits. Here the connection between Mikkeller and Mikkeller Spirits is established. With our skilled collaborators of Braunstein Distillery we decided to distill one of our flagship beers: the Mikkeller Black. This 17,5% ABV imperial stout showed great potential for distilling. It was easy to decide that this was it; this is why we want to enter the micro distilling world. A great beer turned into a great spirit.

Using a copper still we distill one small batch at a time. We select a small special cask for each batch to age on. These batches are exclusive and very limited editions. The selected casks give the different batches uniqueness in taste, aroma and color. They are all bottled without chill or charcoal for the perfect flavor.

Tasting notes

The new-make spirit is as very fruity clean spirit, where the hoppiness and the chrisp taste of dark malts are what meets your mouth, but it is still a rough spirit – therefore we decided to barrel age it!

European oak has always been the finest casks for maturing whisky, especially sherry cask – and this for a good reason – TASTE!

There casks gives the black spirit another level where taste of dark chocolate and taste of dark fruits and nuts come in play – A JOY for the whisky drinker.

The barrels give vanilla and toffee, as we know it from bourbon. The gentle aging on the barrels allows you to enjoy the original character of the new make Black Spirit. The barrels add flavor without overpowering the aromas and taste from the tough but balanced distill of Black. They give, but don’t hide anything.

A release of grain whisky from Japan’s Nikka, produced mainly from corn using one of their continuous Coffey stills. Rather than the rare and limited releases they have done before, this is a larger release to further show off this key component in the Nikka family of whiskies.

Nose: Sweeter and fruitier than the Coffey Malt, this is has oodles of sweet spice, mango and papaya aromas, candied orange peel and coconut.

Palate: Toffee popcorn, with more of that heady citrus and tropical fruit. Quite a mouthful.

Finish: Rich oak and marmalade notes dominate.

Nose: Fresh and clean, with aromas of candied lemon peel and rich cake spices.

Palate: Robust and spicy, quite a dense mouthfeel and richly textured, with cinnamon and clove on the palate, and citrus-tinged freshness to lighten the load.

Finish: Harmonious blend of dense spices, rich oak, and lemon and orange notes. Delightful.

Comment: A fascinating experiment that more than passes the test. This is a delightfully fruity, spicy whisky with a refreshing aromatic zing.
