Deep black almandine with black rim. The bouquet is moderately intense, with some berry fruit supported by leather and graphite shaving bitterness. Fairly direct, in a cool vintage key. On the palate it’s ample and soft, with cherry plum fruit supported by moderate berry fruit acidity, and by tannins that are fairly smooth, with hints of silkiness to them, but not much else. It’s not overripe, and this is a plus, but also lax, and a bit settled; it will age well for years to come.

Rocca’s 2001 Barbaresco Coparossa shows a rich dark ruby color, along with licorice, balsam, toasted oak, and dark fruit flavors, all wrapped into a delicate, medium-bodied frame. It is the more feminine of the two Barbaresco selections and is produced from vineyards in Neive and Treiso.

winemaker’s notes:Good intensity and persistence on the nose, with hints of withered flowers. Well-balanced taste, with good acidity. Excellent after 4 to 10 years whatever the vintage, and up to 15/20 years in outstanding vintages.

The 2008 Barolo is loaded with finesse and grace. Dark red cherries, flowers, spices, mint and minerals are some of the nuances that flow from this beautifully delineated, gorgeous Barolo. Floral notes reappear to frame the sublime finish. Altare’s straight Barolo doesn’t get as much recognition as some of his other wines, but it is once again fabulous in 2008. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2028.

This is a classic Barolo, with excellent structure and harmony, mild tannins and balanced fruit. It is immediately approachable, but it also has a very long ageing potential. The grapes are sourced from family owned vineyards in Serralunga d’Alba (Ornato), Grinzane Cavour (Gustava), La Morra (Roncaglie) and Barolo – Novello (Ravera). The balance of the grapes comes from other exclusive vineyards owned by growers, who have been providing grapes to the Pio Cesare family for generations. Vinification takes place in stainless steel tanks, with skin contact for about 20 days. The wine is aged in mid-toasted French oak for three years: 70 percent in 20 to 50 hectoliter casks; 30 percent in barriques.

“The 2007 Barolo is inviting, sweet and open, yet has plenty of underlying tannins to provide support. It shows terrific balance in a style that reconciles the traditionalist leanings of this bottling with the ripe quality of the year. Sweet hints of tobacco, spices, leather and herbs add complexity on the textured yet grippy finish. Pio Cesare’s straight Barolo doesn’t seem to get the attention or spotlight it deserves, but it has truly been one of Piedmont’s under the radar jewels for some time. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2022.”

The 1999 Le Vigne presents a highly aromatic, perfumed nose and gorgeous layers of bright, focused red fruit on a medium-bodied frame, with excellent length and concentration. This firmly structured Barolo remains a model of restrained elegance and finesse that strikes a gorgeous balance between traditional and modern expressions of Barolo. It will benefit from a few years of bottle age and drink well until age 20.
