In 1902, Nicola Catena, an Italian immigrant, planted his first vineyard in Mendoza, Argentina. The winery has been in family hands for three generations. For the past two decades, owner, Nicolas Catena Zapata and his team of winemakers and viticulturalists have studied the different microclimates and terroirs of Mendoza to determine the best areas and vineyard techniques to grow the winery’s many varietals.

The 2010 Catena Malbec presents a dark, violet color with deep black tones. This microclimate blend of four unique vineyard sites offers intense aromas with a soft generous texture and concentrated flavors. Angelica vineyard lends ripe plum and chocolate flavors with a very soft, supple mouthfeel. Altamira vineyard brings a core of black currant and cassis, with excellent structure and length. La Piramide vineyard offers blackberry fruit with a slight earthy tone and notes of spicy black pepper. Finally, the Adrianna vineyard lends exceptional concentration with explosive floral aromatics. Together they give birth to a complex blend of aromas and flavors – a wine with excellent concentration, balance and freshness.

Catena Zapata Malbec Argentino is made from a meticulous vine selection in the best lots of the Catena family’s estate vineyards. These Zapata vines are carefully hand tended and produce extremely low yields. The grapes are micro-fermented in new French oak barriques and the wine is then aged for 24 months in new French oak. Soft and well-balanced on the palate, it has a slightly acidic note which marries well with traditional local dishes.

Vinification process
Manual harvesting in early October; pre-fermentation for 36/48 hours; pressing; static decantation of the must; fermentation at controlled temperature in stainless steel tanks; ageing in fibre-glass reinforced tanks for about 4/5 months before bottling.

90 Points Wine Spectator: “On the chewy side, with ganache and Black Forest cake notes leading the way, followed by loam, plum sauce, roasted fig and singed alder flavors that form the core and finish. Should drop the chewy edge quickly enough. The core of fruit has a bursting feel. Best from 2015 through 2021. 2,410 cases made.” – James Molesworth

Winemaker’s Notes
Dense, rich powerful and concentrated. A bouquet of mineral scents, cassis and black currants and earthy, smoky scents.

Critical Acclaim
“Made in a lighter style, the fully mature 1999 reveals notes of beef blood, roasted herbs, black truffles, damp earth and black currants intermixed with hints of espresso and spice box. This medium-bodied, velvety textured, lush La Mission should hold nicely for a decade in a cold cellar.”
