winemaker’s notes:The 2011 vintage gave this Pinot beautiful aromas of boysenberry and cherry, supported by earthy tones of pipe tobacco, black licorice and warm baking spice. The broad palate is filled with flavors of ripe plum, dark chocolate and espresso bean, punctuated by savory herb and oral notes. Rich and round, with firm structure and beautifully balanced acidity.

Bright violet color.  Spicy cherry and black raspberry on the fragrant, spice-accented nose, with complicating notes of black pepper and smoky oak.   Chewy, taut dark berry flavors show very good depth and appealing sweetness.  Tannins build on the juicy, spice-accented finish, which is sharply focused and nicely persistent.  This wine offers outstanding value.

The estate was founded in 1981 by Gianni Masciarelli, a pioneer wine producer in his native region of Abruzzo who raised the quality and reputation of the indigenous varietals – the red Montepulciano d’Abruzzo and the white Trebbiano d’Abruzzo. Masciarelli’s wines, which have earned numerous Gambero Rosso awards, appeal to expert and novice alike. Gianni, who worked tirelessly to secure his legacy as one of the true innovators in the Italian wine industry before his untimely passing in summer of 2008. Today, Masciarelli is the largest organically farmed estate in Italy.

Hints of smoke, dusty florals and dark berries are well integrated on the palate leading to a pleasantly persistent finish.
