Winemaker David Guffy selected grapes from three of California’s premium Cabernet winegrowing regions — Mendocino County, Lake County and Napa Valley — to create this wine. Mendocino fruit contributes spice and mid-palate weight, lake County adds the classic red fruit profile of Bing cherry, and Napa Valley maintains our signature style and structure, and flavors of black fruit and cassis.

Bright violet color.  Spicy cherry and black raspberry on the fragrant, spice-accented nose, with complicating notes of black pepper and smoky oak.   Chewy, taut dark berry flavors show very good depth and appealing sweetness.  Tannins build on the juicy, spice-accented finish, which is sharply focused and nicely persistent.  This wine offers outstanding value.

The estate was founded in 1981 by Gianni Masciarelli, a pioneer wine producer in his native region of Abruzzo who raised the quality and reputation of the indigenous varietals – the red Montepulciano d’Abruzzo and the white Trebbiano d’Abruzzo. Masciarelli’s wines, which have earned numerous Gambero Rosso awards, appeal to expert and novice alike. Gianni, who worked tirelessly to secure his legacy as one of the true innovators in the Italian wine industry before his untimely passing in summer of 2008. Today, Masciarelli is the largest organically farmed estate in Italy.

winemaker’s notes:Deep opaque red with violet tinged edges. Rich, powerful bouquet with aromas of baked fruit, cooked with herbs and spices. critical acclaim:
“The 2007 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Costasera emerges from the glass with intricate layers of sweet, perfumed fruit. Flowers, berries and spices develop over time as this nuanced, textured Amarone takes shape. High-toned floral notes add brightness on the finish. The 2007 is one of the best Costaseras I remember tasting. The wine can be enjoyed today for its exuberant, generous fruit or cellared for at least a handful of years. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2022.

This is one of the finest and most consistent set of wines I have tasted from Masi, one of the historic names in Veneto.”

“A juicy Amarone that partners a silky texture with supple tannins, delivering dark flavors of brambly berry fruit and ripe black cherry, layered with smoke, vanilla, anise and clove. There’s seamless integration, with a long finish that echoes the pure fruit flavor. Drink now through 2030. 6,000 cases imported.”

“Costasera is a dark, brooding wine that boasts a dark side, aromatically speaking, in the form of Indian spice, clove, cola, cured meat, bresaola, blackberry and currant. The mouthfeel is dense, chewy and very, very opulent. ”
